It’s often said that the eyes are the windows to the soul.
But did you know that the eyes are also the windows to your health?
Iridology is the traditional health practice of determining a patient’s physical health by analysing distinct changes in the colours and markings of the iris.
According to iridology, markings in the iris correspond to different parts of the human body, such as the lungs, the stomach, the kidneys and the brain.
Daydream Island Resort and Spa is proud to offer iridology as part of its extensive health and beauty services. The Spa provides a holistic approach to wellbeing, with a focus on rejuvenating and re-invigorating to provide optimal health and vitality.
Rejuvenation Spa’s resident Naturopath, Catherine Lanzon, says iridology is an important tool for analysing a person’s overall health.
“Although it’s not diagnostic, iridology is indicative of a person’s general health,” she says. “It’s a very fairly unique service that we offer our guests.”
The iridology service is offered as part of a one-hour wellness consultation at Daydream Island’s Rejuvenation Spa.
Ms Lanzon says she begins each session by taking a thorough medical and diet history, before photographing the irises with a specialised camera.
“It’s very intriguing. I might see blood glucose irregularity caused by a two litres of coke diet or a high sugar diet, or I might see liver spots,” she says.
“I will then make recommendations based on my observations. For example; if they have cholesterol rings and a high cholesterol diet, I would advise them to take steps to remedy their diet. I would also refer them to their GP for appropriate testing.
“Iridology is a powerful tool of assessment that can help us learn about our strengths and weaknesses and take care of our bodies.”

Daydream Island’s resident biologists were witness to one of the world’s natural wonders last week – the annual coral spawning in the Great Barrier Reef.
The amazing phenomenon, which usually resembles an underwater snowstorm, occurs when hard coral polyps simultaneously release egg and sperm into the water column to increase the chance of fertilisation.
Daydream Island Resort and Spa’s Living Reef Manager John Gaskell said island biologists had seen the spectacular sight while diving in the waters off the island.
“The annual coral spawning is an event that has to be seen to be believed,” he said.
“The Great Barrier Reef coral spawning is often referred to as the biggest reproductive phenomenon on earth. We’re incredibly lucky to see such a rare event.”
He said the event always occurred a few days after the full moon in November or December, around two to three hours after dark when most of the day predators were less active.
Large spawning events on Western Australia's reefs usually occur in autumn, while large events on the Great Barrier Reef usually occur in late spring or early summer.
Mr Gaskell said researchers had predicted there would be another spawning event on the Great Barrier Reef approximately four days after the December full moon.

Male clownfish nurturing the eggs |
Daydream Island Resort and Spa in the tropical Whitsundays is getting ready to welcome its first set of baby ‘Nemos’ to the world.
Daydream’s marine biologists have discovered that one of the resort’s six clownfish pairs have laid its first batch of eggs in the Nemoville Lagoon in the iconic Living Reef attraction. The clownfish pair will guard the eggs until they hatch within the next 10 days.
The clownfish, known for its striped orange and white appearance, is often referred to as ‘Nemo’ after the main character of the popular Disney animated film, Finding Nemo.
“With the sea temperatures slowly increasing, many species of fish have begun spawning and sights like this will become more common,” said Living Reef Manager John Gaskell.
“It is great to see that the animals in the Living Reef on Daydream Island are healthy and happy enough in their environment to reproduce.”
Clownfish are monogamous, choosing one partner for life. When the conditions are right and as the water temperature warms up, the male will prepare an area suitable for the female to lay her eggs. The nest area is usually on a hard surface next to an anemone so the anemone tentacles protect the eggs. Once the female lays her eggs it is the male that does most of the work, making sure the eggs are well ventilated and protected from predators. Clownfish eggs hatch in less than 10 days depending on the temperature of the water.
|
The female standing guard |
“Once the young clownfish hatch they will generally be carried away by currents and hopefully drift towards an anemone where they might establish their new home,” John Gaskell said.
“We will endeavour to catch some and put them in a holding tank to ensure survival, though this might be difficult as they hatch at night.
“Either way we can expect an increase in our clownfish population which is always one of our most popular attractions.”
Daydream Island Resort and Spa’s Living Reef is one of the world's largest man-made living coral reef lagoons.
It is home to more than 140 species of colourful marine fish, 82 species of coral and 15 species of invertebrates such as starfish, sea cucumbers and crabs.
Comprising a north and south lagoon and holding more than 1.5 million litres of water, the Living Reef lets visitors learn about and get up close to the fascinating inhabitants of the Great Barrier Reef.

John Gaskell snorkelling at Daydream Island |
Snorkelling on Daydream Island’s fringing coral reef is fast becoming one of the ‘must do’ activities for guests at the Whitsunday resort.
Daydream is located very close to Airlie Beach on the Whitsunday coast and about a two-hour boat ride away from the world-renowned Great Barrier Reef.
Daydream Island’s resident marine biologist and Living Reef manager John Gaskell says that many people aren’t aware that Daydream has such a rich diversity of marine life immediately off the island.
“Many people assume the marine life density and diversity is nothing special,” Mr Gaskell said. “At least not until they get in.
“The health of this fringing reef habitat is actually comparable to the best and most dense parts of the Great Barrier Reef.
|
Honeycomb Moray Eel |
“It may not have the consistently clear water of the outer reef, but there is no shortage of fascinating animals.”
Over the past three months, Daydream’s Living Reef biologists have taken the opportunity to investigate the coral reef habitats that surround Daydream Island and document their findings.
“Spending every opportunity in the water has certainly changed our view of the fringing reef health around Daydream Island,” Mr Gaskell said.
Stony Corals such as Staghorn and Brain Corals dominate the south-eastern side, whereas up at Lovers Cove on the north-west, colourful soft corals use the island as protection from the current. In amongst these corals lives a surprising diversity of marine animals.
Daydream is set in the Molle Channel providing good nutrient flow and plenty of opportunity for species recruitment. Colourful corals, reef fish, turtles, eels, octopuses, small sharks, rays, shrimps and colourful nudibranchs are just some of the animals that are commonly observed while snorkelling there.
|
Flowerpot coral at Daydream |
It was not until recently that the Daydream team decided to grab their torches and snorkels to venture out at night. It is well known in the marine world that the ocean comes alive at night as many species prefer to hunt with the cover of darkness. Daydream Island is no exception. Octopuses, squids, huge crayfish, “friendly” sharks, rays and a range of invertebrates all contribute to the busy nightlife throughout the fringing reef.
Although night snorkelling is not recommended without experience, Daydream Island’s Lovers Cove provides a safe haven to view many of the animals. And for those who want to experience the local wild fish and prefer not to get too wet, this is where wild fish feeding takes place.
John Gaskell has also developed an iPhone app called Sea Life Australia, which identifies and provides information on over 950 species of marine life in Australia’s waters.
“I’m very impressed with the number and variety of species found right here on Daydream’s fringing reef itself,” he said.
|
Fish feeding at Lovers Cove |
“You do not need to venture out to the heart of the Great Barrier Reef to get an amazing tropical reef experience.”
Guests can either bring their own snorkelling gear or else hire it from the water sports centre.

THE Whitsunday’s Daydream Island Resort and Spa is celebrating today after being featured on an episode of the Seven Network’s new reality show Bringing Sexy Back.
The reality television show features the incredible transformations of ordinary Australians after making the decision to improve their health and fitness.
Last night’s episode featured Livio Caldarone, a pizza chef from the Sunshine Coast who gained 40 kilograms in just two years. Fearing for his health and suffering from low self-esteem, Livio held off on committing to a wedding date to his fiancé and mother to his two children, Holly, until he was able to bring back the man she fell in love with.
After more than five months of exercise and healthy eating, Livio travelled to Daydream Island where he unveiled his amazing transformation and 33-kilogram weight loss in front of his family and friends. With the wedding being the motivating event of his weight loss journey, Livio was also able to fulfill his dream of marrying the love of his life at their dream wedding destination where they said their ‘I-dos’ the very next day.
|
Holly and Livio with their children |
Holly and Livio were married at magical Lovers Cove, which is one of the most exclusive and private locations on Daydream Island. It offers the best of natural beauty, hosting a large wooden deck set on a white coral beach with waves rolling in just metres away and the Whitsunday Passage as the backdrop.
For an island location, this project was logistically huge.
Months of planning and preparation went into the episode, which involved organising barges to transport freight and lighting trucks along with the famous Sexy truck, which holds the state of the art Dexa body scanner over to the island. It was a multi-camera shoot and we were even lucky enough to witness a drone camera in operation, which was able to capture amazing aerial footage of the island.
Not only did Daydream host the wedding party on the island, but also hosted up to 34 Seven Network crew members over four days, along with high profile host Samantha Armytage, personal trainer to the stars Cameron Byrnes and stylist, Jules Sebastian.
Daydream Island Resort and Spa’s CEO Scott Wilkinson said he was delighted that Livio had chosen Daydream Island for his wedding and weight-loss reveal.
“We’re thrilled that we could be part of this life-changing moment for Livio,” he said.
“Daydream was the perfect backdrop for them and their family and friends who all contributed to a special experience.
“We strive to provide a memorable and enjoyable experience for all of our guests where they can enjoy quality accommodation, superior service, delicious food and a range of activities against the beautiful backdrop of the Whitsunday Passage.
“It’s the perfect place to relax and feel reinvigorated and renewed.”
He said the exposure and potential interest generated from the show for both the leisure and wedding markets would be invaluable.
Livio was amazed by the location and wedding on Daydream Island.
“It was the most wonderful experience; I had the wedding of my dreams,” he said.
“Daydream was the perfect place for a reveal and I felt like a superstar.”
Daydream Island is home to three stunning ceremony venues. Along with Lovers Cove, which featured on the episode, there is the Endeavour Wedding Chapel which is situated at the water’s edge and featuring a floor to ceiling glass wall behind the altar. Ceremonies are also held on the picturesque and iconic Mermaids Beach with Daydream Island’s signature bronzed mermaids and the Whitsunday Islands as the perfect backdrop.
The multi award-winning resort, which recently took out best ‘Waterview’ and ‘Resort Reception’ venue at the inaugural Queensland Wedding and Events of Australia ‘Awards for Excellence’, can cater for weddings from two right up to 250 guests. With eight magnificent reception venues available and with a dedicated team of wedding professionals, couples are spoilt for choice at Daydream Island.
“It’s wonderful that we can raise awareness of Daydream and the Whitsunday Islands like this,” Mr Wilkinson said. “We look forward to welcoming more people to beautiful Daydream Island.”

The statistics are alarming: an estimated 1 in 3 women in Australia will be diagnosed with cancer before the age of 85. Unfortunately, this could be yourself or someone close to you - I currently have a family member who has started her battle with breast cancer.
This is an issue that is very close to my heart. I think it’s important to stand up, increase awareness and raise much-needed funds in order to help with cancer prevention and treatment
Hopefully one day, with more awareness, treatment and funding, we can help reduce the number of people who are diagnosed with cancer.
Christine Poole
Over the past few years I've had way too many friends diagnosed with breast cancer. Thankfully they have all been able to overcome this terrible disease and are now cancer free.
Unfortunately not all women are as lucky and I want to do my part to help raise money for research into women’s cancers. Hopefully the number of women being diagnosed with cancer can be reduced and the survival odds for those diagnosed can be increased.
Jenny Brown
When I was asked if I would like to participate in the Weekend Walk to End Women’s Cancers I thought there was no way I could walk 60 km - let alone two weeks prior to getting married! I’m too lazy to even walk to the shops!
But when I thought about it further – what better way to say farewell to my maiden name than to participate in this amazing event?
There are many people in my life who have been affected by women’s cancers. My best friend’s mum was recently diagnosed with ovarian cancer so I have seen the massive effect it has had on her seeing her mum go through treatment. I’ve also been a shoulder to cry on.
After seeing how cancer affects not only the individual but their family and support networks, it made me realise just how important it is that we spread awareness and continue with research to help with early detection and effective treatments.
My friend really wanted to do this walk, but due to circumstances beyond her control she was unable to attend. So at the end of the day, I am walking with them both in mind.
Please show your support and help me fundraise for this great cause. If all these amazing women can fight cancer, the least I can do walk 60kms; the least you can do is donate.
Karen Maher
I am doing the walk as I have seen a few friends struggle through different treatments for cancer. I felt no matter how uncomfortable this weekend might be physically for me it’s nothing compared to what patients go through to fight this disease.
The funds we’re raising in the Weekend Walk to End Women’s Cancers will help greatly with the ongoing research in finding a cure or better treatments.
Jessica Ireland
Two years ago, I unfortunately lost my aunty to cancer. It has been the hardest thing to date that I have ever had to deal with. She was a real fighter and fought cancer for many years but unfortunately lost the battle. There is not a day that goes by that I don’t think about her.
Last year I wanted to do the walk but I was quite heavily pregnant so I decided this year I would do it and the wonderful girls who I work with also want to do it with me.
Unfortunately in life we will all know someone who will battle this horrible disease. I believe we should do anything we can to help raise money to find a cure and this why I am taking part in the Weekend Walk to End Women’s Cancers. I am doing this for my aunty but also for every single person in the world who fights cancer.

The wedding of Michael and Lesa Hapgood |
YOUR wedding day will probably be one of the biggest events you’ll ever organise.
After the engagement ring is on your finger, there’s a lot to prepare for your big day! You’ll need to hire a venue and a celebrant, choose a photographer, select the decorations and music and decide on a theme to ‘tie’ it all together. And that’s not even the half of it!
If you’re feeling a little overwhelmed, then it’s a great comfort to know that as part of your wedding package Daydream Island’s professional wedding coordinators will help with all of the arrangements.
A good wedding coordinator is worth their weight in gold. They will work tirelessly to ensure your vision becomes a reality. From booking the ceremony and reception venues to liaising with external vendors like the cake artists, florist and stationers, they will make your wedding planning experience as stress-free as possible.
And on your actual wedding day, they will help manage the logistics. They will gather family members for the family portraits, ensure the venue is decorated properly and there is a knife available for cutting your three-tiered chocolate wedding cake!
For Michael and Lesa Hapgood, getting married on Daydream Island in the Whitsundays this year was , they were assigned a wedding coordinator, Kate Moore.
“Kate went through all of our needs and wants and constantly was in contact with us no matter what,” Lesa explained. “Kate was always there to answer our questions no matter how big or small or silly I thought they were. She always promptly answered my emails and seemed to work past the 9-5 hours.”
When they arrived on Daydream Island, Kate met with them to discuss the finer details of the day and accommodate all of their needs and requests.
“Michael and I had a clear idea of the food we wanted at our wedding. We did not want typical wedding food. We requested if we could have beach burgers (from Mermaids) and fish and chips. Without question Kate made this possible,” Lesa said.
Lesa and Michael's wedding day on May 14 this year went seamlessly. They were married in the Endeavour Chapel and had their reception on the Sunlovers Terrace.
“Kate was very understanding of a nervous bride to be and helped to keep me grounded. She made our day run so smoothly and perfectly, and was there every step of the way to ensure we experienced nothing less than perfection,” Lesa said.
“Both (wedding and reception) locations were set up gorgeously and met all of our expectations.”
The couple said they would be “forever thankful” to Kate for planning their special day.
“Kate has shown her true love and passion in the excellence of her work and all she does. Sometimes you forget that this is her job and you start to think of her as a friend helping you plan your wedding day,” Lesa said.
“We are planning to return to Daydream Island for our one-year anniversary and will be definitely looking forward to catching up with her.”

Redheaded Gobi |
Daydream Island’s Living Reef has become home to some fascinating creatures, which are rarely seen without close investigation and shows the diversity of life in the resort’s iconic lagoon system.
Living Reef manager John Gaskell has recently uncovered creatures in the lagoons including the Redheaded Goby, Brittle Star, Snapping Shrimp, Squat Lobster and the Orange Spot Mantis Shrimp.
“As we continue to develop and maintain the lagoons we often discover new species we didn’t know we had,” Mr Gaskell said.
“Many of these are found living in the live rock and corals and most likely came in as juveniles and have managed to thrive. This shows the health of the lagoon system.”
Live rock has been collected under permit and transferred to the Living Reef over a number of years. Live rock is generally made up of the calcium carbonate skeleton of previously living coral. When the coral dies hundreds of microorganisms inhabit the structure, many of which are juveniles or in their larval stage.
“We’ve discovered the amazing Orange Spot Mantis Shrimp, one of the most incredible species of the marine world and something very colourful to look at which is now on display in the Living Reef Centre.”
Some of the recently discovered inhabitants found in the Living Reef include:
Redheaded Goby - Rarely seen species of goby that hides within coral reef habitats.
Coral (Trapezia) Crabs - These crabs are from the same crab family which includes species that live within Stony Corals. They feed on the tissue of the coral that they live within and with defend their coral home from other predators.
Porcelain Crab - Tiny crab with relatively unknown life history, found within coral reefs.
|
Brittle Star |
Brittle Star - A relative of star fishes and sea urchins that can move arms independently and walk relatively fast along the ocean floor. Rarely seen during the day as they are nocturnal.
Squat Lobster - A relative of hermit crabs that does not use a sea snail shell for protection. Instead squat lobsters are excellent at hiding and can move in extremely fast bursts when threatened.
Snapping Shrimp – An amazing little shrimp with a large ‘snapping’ claw that can be opened and shut with incredible force creating a loud snapping sound. The force of the claw snapping shut generates acoustic pressures that can be heard throughout the coral reef habitat it lives in.
|
Orange Spot Mantis Shrimp |
Orange Spot Mantis Shrimp - Mantis shrimp have the most complex eyes known to science. They have two rotating eyes that are the equivalent of six human eyes and can even see in ultra violet. Human eyes can detect a combination of three colours (red, green and blue), whereas the mantis shrimp’s eyes can detect 12, nine of which humans cannot even comprehend. To catch its prey the Orange Spot Mantis Shrimp has two smashing clubs that replace a regular shrimp’s claws. The speed at which a mantis shrimp punches out its smashing club is thought to be the fastest mechanical acceleration of any animal. It is so fast, that the impact produces cavitation bubbles - creating even more pressure.
The Living Reef is one of the world's largest man-made living coral reef lagoons.

Daydream Island Resort and
Spa’s new Executive Chef Ashley Duff is cooking up some changes at the tropical
Whitsundays getaway.
After spending almost a
decade working on cruise ships around the world, Ashley brings a wealth of international
experience to Daydream where he will be delivering a menu predominantly
seafood-based complemented by tapas-style dining options.
“This perfectly suits our
alfresco dining setting with the backdrop of the Whitsunday islands,” he said.
“I am incorporating more
seafood into the menus and modernising them for the tropical climate we are in
by steering away from gravies and jus and using more vinaigrettes.
“There is also more focus on
locally produced food, from seafood such as Queensland scallops and tiger
prawns, to fruit and veggies, beef, chicken and lamb. I’ll be working hard to source
wonderful food from as close to Daydream as possible.”
Ashley kicked off his
culinary career in Victoria where he cooked for Melbourne’s elite at various
venues including five star hotels and at the exclusive Mornington Peninsula
before moving to London to develop his skills.
For the past seven years he has
worked with Royal Caribbean on numerous liners where he was responsible for
catering for up to 3600 passengers, 24 hour a days, seven days a week.
Ashley is in charge of all
food production on Daydream, from Splashes Pool Bar to signature restaurant
Mermaid’s, and has already begun implementing some delicious new changes.
“In Fishbowl Tavern, we’ve
introduced some of the best baby back ribs you can have. It’s a three day
process to produce our ribs which are slowly caramelised on our char grill,” he
said.
“In Mermaids, we will soon
be introducing signature dishes like a Bouillabaisse-style
seafood soup with lobster, mud crab and prawns, using some of the fantastic
product we have in Queensland to really show off the restaurant.”
Mermaids a la carte restaurant
offers a unique culinary experience where guests can feast on the freshest fish
of the day caught straight from the sea to your plate.
Daydream also offers more
relaxed dining options including the Fishbowl Tavern, Waterfalls Restaurant,
Boat House Bakery, Lagoons Bar, Splashes and Gilligan’s Health Hut.
