If you’re looking for some holiday inspiration and keen to plan your stay ahead of time, here are five great holiday ideas to pass your days on gorgeous Daydream Island:

1) Water activities

Daydream Island is located in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and overlooking the spectacular Whitsunday Passage. Surrounded by beautiful blue water and with some amazing swimming pools of it’s own, it’s no surprise that water-based activities are top of mind for most visitors to the Resort.

There are catamarans and kayaks available for use as well as boats and jet skis for hire. In fact, these waters offer some of the best sailing in the country. There’s no better place to learn to sail than Daydream Island.

Snorkeling is one of the most popular activities with Daydream having its own spectacular fringing coral reef, providing much colour amongst all the coral formations and tropical fish species. Count how many different species you can spot during a fish feeding session. Snorkeling equipment and fish food is available for hire.

2) Living Reef

The amazing Living Reef is a must-see during your stay on the island. It’s hard to miss as it’s located at the entrance to the resort and consists of two large man-made coral reef lagoons, home for more than 140 species of colourful marine animals and 83 species of coral.

You can hand-feed resident stingrays, baby sharks and barramundi as well as learn about the wondrous marine eco-system. Lagoon favourites Pikelet and Pancake the stingrays and Bruce the sickle fin lemon shark are on show.

Free educational fish feeding sessions conducted by the experienced marine biologists are held each day. There are a range of more immersive and hands on tours available to get closer to the lagoons and their inhabitants, including the Reef Ranger and Stingray Splash experiences.

It’s educational, awe inspiring and the best way to get a Reef experience without going out to the Reef itself.

3) Rejuvenation Spa

Located at the northern end of Daydream Island, the Rejuvenation Spa is an award winning facility that combines an extensive array of health and beauty treatments to pamper and reinvigorate the mind, body and soul.

The Spa provides a holistic approach to wellbeing, offering the time-tested health benefits of naturopathy, aromatherapy, hydrotherapy and massage, along with an array of beauty therapies.

Facilities include 16 individual treatment rooms, vichy showers, thermal tables, hydrotherapy tubs, steam effusion showers, dual treatment rooms, dual spa baths and private relaxation areas.

The Spa will have you looking and feeling your best in no time, and with one of the best views in Australia.

4) Rainforest Walk

A leisurely rainforest walk is one way for visitors to Daydream to really experience the natural beauty of the island’s wildlife and flora.

Daydream’s 30-minute rainforest walk provides a truly up close and personal view of the island. The walk is a fairly leisurely hike where you will feel a world away and can appreciate an estimated 200 species of plant life on the island.

During the walk you can look out to the horizon and enjoy breathtaking views of the ocean, and sometimes even spot whales, turtles and dugongs.

In fact, a visit to Daydream is a step into a natural, living and breathing sanctuary. Getting back to nature is a perfect way to relax and unwind and that’s what Daydream is all about.

5) Relax!

Some of the best activities actually involve not doing very much. After all, a holiday for many is as much about relaxation. Daydream’s popular outdoor cinema is a great place to sit back and enjoy a movie on the big screen.

Gorgeous Lovers Cove is the perfect location for Sunset drinks and nibbles to enjoy the spectacular sunsets over the Whitsunday Passage.

Or, how about a cool cocktail, good book and a lounge chair poolside for an afternoon of taking in the tropical island surroundings?

IF snorkelling with the marine life of the Great Barrier Reef is on your bucket list, you may want to book a trip to Daydream Island immediately.

Located in the Whitsundays, Daydream Island is one of the most naturally beautiful islands in Australia with white coral beaches and turquoise seas.

The island is also a snorkeller’s paradise.

John Gaskell, the manager of Daydream Island’s Living Reef attraction, and resident marine biologist, said the waters surrounding the island were teaming with fish and coral.

“The diversity of fish and corals found around Daydream Island is comparable to even the most dense parts of the Great Barrier Reef,” he said.

He said the coral reefs, particularly those around popular Lovers Cove, allowed people to snorkel in a safe environment that boasted many of the region’s marine wonders.

Here are five great reasons you should snorkel at Daydream Island:

1) Easy Access

The island is easily accessible to travellers and is only a 30-minute ferry trip from the Great Barrier Reef Airport on Hamilton Island (which has direct flights daily to Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Cairns).

Travellers can also fly to the Whitsunday Coast Airport in Proserpine on the mainland. From the airport, there is a 30-minute transfer to the Abel Point Marina in Airlie Beach, where a connecting ferry transfers guests to Daydream in 30 minutes.

Once you get to the island, you can immediately go snorkelling off one of the island’s most popular locations, Lovers Cove.

2) You can see Nemo’s Cousin!

Ever since the Disney movie Finding Nemo, children and adults have alike have been fascinated by the striking orange Clownfish or ‘Nemo’.

At Daydream Island, snorkellers can see ‘Nemo’s cousin, the gorgeous Red-And-Black Anemonefish. They can also see five other Anemonefish from the same genus in this part of the Great Barrier Reef.

“Evidence of breeding Red-and-Black Anemonefish is an indicator of the health of the fringing reef habitat that surrounds Daydream Island,” said Mr Gaskell.

3) Great variety
SEE the marine world come alive at night with Daydream Island Resort and Spa’s exciting new Night Tours at its popular Living Reef lagoons.

Holidaymakers will be able to see the fascinating inhabitants of Daydream’s Living Reef – one of the world’s largest man-made living coral reef lagoons – from a completely different perspective.

Living Reef Manager John Gaskell said the Night Tours were a fantastic opportunity to see what marine creatures got up to at night.

“We’ve found that marine creatures, particularly the big rays, tend to be quite active at night time so it’s an excellent time to see them up close,” he said.

“They will be able to feed baby sharks, hold a baby bamboo shark and a sea star, feed and touch the huge stingrays and learn about Australian marine life from Daydream Island’s resident marine biologists. It’s an unforgettable experience.”

The Living Reef is home to more than 140 species of colourful marine fish, 82 species of coral and 15 species of other invertebrates such as starfish, sea cucumbers and crabs. It comprises two lagoons and holds more than 1.5 million litres of water.

New marine animals are continually being discovered in the Living Reef, with many of these on display in tanks in the Living Reef centre. Ever popular clownfish also call The Living Reef home and are a continual favourite with guests and one of the iconic images of Daydream Island and The Great Barrier Reef.

The Night Tours are available every Friday from 6.15pm at the Living Reef Centre. Prices are $25 per person or $70 for a family (two adults, two children).

Bookings are essential – please book at the activities desk before 4pm on Daydream Island Resort and Spa or call 1800 075 400.
Iconic Queensland tropical island destination Daydream Island Resort and Spa in the Whitsundays will (subject to Government approval) be sold to China Capital Investment Group (www.ccig.com) for an undisclosed sum. It is currently intended that the sale will take place in mid March 2015.

Following an extensive international marketing campaign Daydream Island’s long-time owner Mr Vaughan Bullivant has secured a sale to CCIG Australia Pty Ltd and CCIG Investments Pty Ltd. The new owners intend to continue to operate Daydream Island Resort and Spa and invest money into the gradual refurbishment of the popular resort.

“I’m delighted that we’ve found an investor that can continue to operate Daydream with the current management team and take it securely forward,” Mr Bullivant said.

“Daydream Island has been a huge part of my life and I’ve put so much passion into making it a great tropical island experience but have known for some time it’s best for another owner to continue my vision.

“This is a great day for Daydream and whilst I’m sad to be parting ways the island has a very bright future.

“The new owners also have an opportunity to develop further the southern end of the island and offer new accommodation experiences.”

China Capital Investment Group, based in Shanghai, has several tourism assets in its portfolio with Daydream Island representing its first investment in Australia.

Chairman of CCIG Chuanyou Zhou said, "We look forward to improving the property and providing both domestic and international guests with a continued high level of quality service and enhancing their holiday experience.”

Vitamin and health magnate Mr Bullivant bought Daydream Island in 2000 and immediately reinvigorated the resort with an extensive overhaul to bring it up to international standards and become one of the most sought after holiday destinations in Australia.

Daydream Island Resort and Spa chief executive officer Scott Wilkinson said, “It’s business as usual at Daydream and we’re pleased to welcome a new owner who will continue to develop the tourism experience for our guests in our key markets.

“We’ve just experienced a busy holiday period and look forward to building on the positive guest feedback we continue to receive.

“Our leisure, weddings and conferencing sectors all have strong forward bookings for 2015. It’s going to be an exciting year ahead.”

Four and a half star Daydream Island Resort and Spa has 296 rooms and suites, each offering views of tropical waters or rainforest. The island features white coral beaches and lush rainforest and has been the recipient of numerous tourism and hospitality awards including the 2014 Whitsunday Tourism award for Best Deluxe Accommodation, subsequent induction into the Hall of Fame, and a prestigious silver award for deluxe accommodation at the 2014 Queensland Tourism Awards.

Daydream Island is home to The Living Reef which is the largest open air aquarium in the Southern Hemisphere and is located within the resort and comprises two lagoons with over 80 varieties of coral and more than 140 species of fish including sharks, stingrays, giant barramundi and many tropical marine fish including the much loved clownfish.

Guests can also indulge and be pampered at the world-class Rejuvenation Spa. The refined elegance of this spectacular facility is reflected in its 16 private rooms offering the latest in naturopathy, hydrotherapy, aromatherapy or reflexology to stimulate the senses and bring harmony to mind, body and soul.
Over the years society’s view of a healthy body has changed dramatically, from the super muscular to the ultra-skinny.

Today, health practitioners recognise that health is determined by more than just a number on the scales.

According to naturopath, Catherine Lanzon, at Daydream Island’s Rejuvenation Spa, a simple weight measurement doesn’t tell the whole story. A person can be perfectly fit or perfectly fat at exactly the same weight. What may vary, however, is a person’s body composition.

Catherine uses Body Composition Analysis as a key tool in providing accurate information on not only weight, but muscle mass, total fat percentage, visceral fat, bone mass and hydration. Body Composition also gives an indication of metabolic age, which is a measure of how rapidly the body is ageing due to diet and lifestyle factors. Your metabolic age can be higher or lower than your actual age depending on diet and lifestyle.

“At the Rejuvenation Spa, we like to take a holistic approach to assessing health. As well as extensive beauty and spa services, we also offer traditional naturopathy services,” says Catherine.

The body composition test can be taken in addition to a one-hour wellness consultation, which looks at diet, exercise, stress management and sleep hygiene.

“The leading causes of mortality in Australia are lifestyle diseases, namely coronary heart disease, stroke, diabetes and obesity. Body Composition analysis can provide great motivation for individuals to change diet and lifestyle to combat these diseases.

“Today’s modern lifestyle involves people dragging themselves out of bed every morning and grabbing a coffee like it’s a lifeline, followed by multiple caffeine and sugar hits throughout the day. Caffeine is a stimulant which depletes our ability to handle stress. Our high stress lifestyles often see us gravitating towards the most available sedative, alcohol. Unfortunately both caffeine and alcohol can lead to poor quality sleep and so the cycle continues.

“We want our clients to have optimal energy and vitality so they are bright, bubbly and enthusiastic about a new day. That’s what we try to achieve in a consultation.”
Daydream Island Resort and Spa has underlined its reputation as one of the premier conference destinations in Australia after welcoming a 200-strong conference delegation to the island in October.

Plumbing Plus, Australia’s leading independent supplier of bathroom and plumbing products, held its annual staff conference at Daydream from October 22-26, 2014.

Daydream Island CEO Scott Wilkinson said that Daydream Island’s depth of experience as a conference destination was unrivalled in the Whitsundays.

“We were delighted to host Plumbing Plus’s annual conference at Daydream Island and exceed their expectations,” he said.

“We are committed to ensuring our conference delegates always have an exceptional experience, from our quality accommodation and conference venues to food and beverage and the extensive leisure activities around the island.

“The island’s natural beauty and its location in the world-renowned Whitsunday Islands are a major attraction.”

He said interest in the Whitsundays as a conference destination was growing and it was exciting to see the region attracting groups of this size.

Karen Maher, Daydream Island’s Business Development Manager, said Daydream Island’s conference team worked closely with Plumbing Plus to create a memorable and fun event that met all of its needs.

“We hosted some amazing entertainment including stand-up comedy from Mikey Robins, musical performances from pop star Samantha Jade and Darryl Braithwaite and a show by illusionist and magician Matt Hollywood,” Ms Maher said.

“Delegates also enjoyed a range of leisure activities including a cruise to the magnificent Whitehaven Beach where a special marquee was set-up for lunch, and a Hawaiian welcome dinner.”

Plumbing Plus’s conference organiser Vickie Scobie from Conference In Style praised the Daydream Island team running the event.

“The staff on Daydream Island should be highly commended for the many hours they endured to ensure we had a great time,” Ms Scobie said.

“It was a memorable event and one that I am sure our delegates will be talking about for some time to come.

“The size of the island was perfect for a group of this size, it contained the delegates but on the same note we were able to have three different events in three different areas of the island adding variety to every dinner venue without having to travel far.”

Daydream Island Resort and Spa is an ideal destination for conferences, meetings, trade shows, product launches and organisational incentive or team building activities. Daydream can cater for conferences of all sizes. It is big enough to host major events for up to 300 delegates (catering for up to 600 including partners) and yet small enough to provide a personal touch.
White coral beaches, rainforest, pampering spa treatments and adventurous activities combine to stimulate and inspire delegates.
It’s often said that the eyes are the windows to the soul.

But did you know that the eyes are also the windows to your health?

Iridology is the traditional health practice of determining a patient’s physical health by analysing distinct changes in the colours and markings of the iris.

According to iridology, markings in the iris correspond to different parts of the human body, such as the lungs, the stomach, the kidneys and the brain.

Daydream Island Resort and Spa is proud to offer iridology as part of its extensive health and beauty services. The Spa provides a holistic approach to wellbeing, with a focus on rejuvenating and re-invigorating to provide optimal health and vitality.

Rejuvenation Spa’s resident Naturopath, Catherine Lanzon, says iridology is an important tool for analysing a person’s overall health.

“Although it’s not diagnostic, iridology is indicative of a person’s general health,” she says. “It’s a very fairly unique service that we offer our guests.”

The iridology service is offered as part of a one-hour wellness consultation at Daydream Island’s Rejuvenation Spa.

Ms Lanzon says she begins each session by taking a thorough medical and diet history, before photographing the irises with a specialised camera.

“It’s very intriguing. I might see blood glucose irregularity caused by a two litres of coke diet or a high sugar diet, or I might see liver spots,” she says.

“I will then make recommendations based on my observations. For example; if they have cholesterol rings and a high cholesterol diet, I would advise them to take steps to remedy their diet. I would also refer them to their GP for appropriate testing.

“Iridology is a powerful tool of assessment that can help us learn about our strengths and weaknesses and take care of our bodies.”
Daydream Island Resort and Spa has been judged the silver award winner in the keenly contested Deluxe Accommodation category at the 2014 Queensland Tourism Awards.
The state awards follow on from the recently concluded regional tourism awards where Daydream was successful in winning this category in the Whitsunday Tourism & Business Awards 2014.

Daydream Island Resort and Spa Chief Executive Officer Scott Wilkinson said he was delighted to finish so high up in the Queensland awards which pitted Daydream Island against other hopefuls from around Queensland.

“The Queensland Tourism Awards are extremely competitive and even to be a finalist is a great achievement,” Mr Wilkinson said.

“We’re competing against operators from all tourism regions around Queensland in these awards.

“It’s most pleasing to be able to carry out the vision of our owner Mr Vaughan Bullivant in providing a fabulous tropical island holiday experience.”

Daydream Island Resort and Spa was this year also inducted into the Hall of Fame for winning the Deluxe Accommodation category three years in a row at the Whitsunday Tourism & Business Awards 2014. The resort took out the Best Tourist Attraction for the Living Reef - one of the world’s largest man-made living lagoons, and the People’s Choice categories.

Daydream has also just been ranked as one of the Top Hotels in the Whitsundays region by international hotel search website, Trivago, based on consumer ratings.
Daydream Island’s resident biologists were witness to one of the world’s natural wonders last week – the annual coral spawning in the Great Barrier Reef.

The amazing phenomenon, which usually resembles an underwater snowstorm, occurs when hard coral polyps simultaneously release egg and sperm into the water column to increase the chance of fertilisation.

Daydream Island Resort and Spa’s Living Reef Manager John Gaskell said island biologists had seen the spectacular sight while diving in the waters off the island.

“The annual coral spawning is an event that has to be seen to be believed,” he said.

“The Great Barrier Reef coral spawning is often referred to as the biggest reproductive phenomenon on earth. We’re incredibly lucky to see such a rare event.”

He said the event always occurred a few days after the full moon in November or December, around two to three hours after dark when most of the day predators were less active.

Large spawning events on Western Australia's reefs usually occur in autumn, while large events on the Great Barrier Reef usually occur in late spring or early summer.

Mr Gaskell said researchers had predicted there would be another spawning event on the Great Barrier Reef approximately four days after the December full moon.

Daydream Island Resort and Spa in the tropical Whitsundays is getting ready to welcome its first set of baby ‘Nemos’ to the world.

Daydream’s marine biologists have discovered that one of the resort’s six clownfish pairs have laid its first batch of eggs in the Nemoville Lagoon in the iconic Living Reef attraction. The clownfish pair will guard the eggs until they hatch within the next 10 days.

The clownfish, known for its striped orange and white appearance, is often referred to as ‘Nemo’ after the main character of the popular Disney animated film, Finding Nemo.

“With the sea temperatures slowly increasing, many species of fish have begun spawning and sights like this will become more common,” said Living Reef Manager John Gaskell.

“It is great to see that the animals in the Living Reef on Daydream Island are healthy and happy enough in their environment to reproduce.”

Clownfish are monogamous, choosing one partner for life. When the conditions are right and as the water temperature warms up, the male will prepare an area suitable for the female to lay her eggs. The nest area is usually on a hard surface next to an anemone so the anemone tentacles protect the eggs. Once the female lays her eggs it is the male that does most of the work, making sure the eggs are well ventilated and protected from predators. Clownfish eggs hatch in less than 10 days depending on the temperature of the water.

The female standing guard

“Once the young clownfish hatch they will generally be carried away by currents and hopefully drift towards an anemone where they might establish their new home,” John Gaskell said.

“We will endeavour to catch some and put them in a holding tank to ensure survival, though this might be difficult as they hatch at night.

“Either way we can expect an increase in our clownfish population which is always one of our most popular attractions.”

Daydream Island Resort and Spa’s Living Reef is one of the world's largest man-made living coral reef lagoons.

It is home to more than 140 species of colourful marine fish, 82 species of coral and 15 species of invertebrates such as starfish, sea cucumbers and crabs.

Comprising a north and south lagoon and holding more than 1.5 million litres of water, the Living Reef lets visitors learn about and get up close to the fascinating inhabitants of the Great Barrier Reef.
Daydream Island’s resident marine biologist and Living Reef manager John Gaskell says that many people aren’t aware that Daydream has such a rich diversity of marine life immediately off the island.

“Many people assume the marine life density and diversity is nothing special,” Mr Gaskell said. “At least not until they get in.

“The health of this fringing reef habitat is actually comparable to the best and most dense parts of the Great Barrier Reef.
“It may not have the consistently clear water of the outer reef, but there is no shortage of fascinating animals.”

Over the past three months, Daydream’s Living Reef biologists have taken the opportunity to investigate the coral reef habitats that surround Daydream Island and document their findings.

“Spending every opportunity in the water has certainly changed our view of the fringing reef health around Daydream Island,” Mr Gaskell said.

Stony Corals such as Staghorn and Brain Corals dominate the south-eastern side, whereas up at Lovers Cove on the north-west, colourful soft corals use the island as protection from the current. In amongst these corals lives a surprising diversity of marine animals.

Daydream is set in the Molle Channel providing good nutrient flow and plenty of opportunity for species recruitment. Colourful corals, reef fish, turtles, eels, octopuses, small sharks, rays, shrimps and colourful nudibranchs are just some of the animals that are commonly observed while snorkelling there.

Flowerpot coral at Daydream

It was not until recently that the Daydream team decided to grab their torches and snorkels to venture out at night. It is well known in the marine world that the ocean comes alive at night as many species prefer to hunt with the cover of darkness. Daydream Island is no exception. Octopuses, squids, huge crayfish, “friendly” sharks, rays and a range of invertebrates all contribute to the busy nightlife throughout the fringing reef.

Although night snorkelling is not recommended without experience, Daydream Island’s Lovers Cove provides a safe haven to view many of the animals. And for those who want to experience the local wild fish and prefer not to get too wet, this is where wild fish feeding takes place.

John Gaskell has also developed an iPhone app called Sea Life Australia, which identifies and provides information on over 950 species of marine life in Australia’s waters.

“I’m very impressed with the number and variety of species found right here on Daydream’s fringing reef itself,” he said.

“You do not need to venture out to the heart of the Great Barrier Reef to get an amazing tropical reef experience.”

Guests can either bring their own snorkelling gear or else hire it from the water sports centre.

Daydream’s on-island Living Reef attraction is one of the world's largest man-made living coral reef lagoons, home to more than 140 species of marine fish, 82 species of coral and 15 species of invertebrates such as starfish, sea cucumbers and crabs.

Comprising a north and south lagoon and holding more than 1.5 million litres of water, the Living Reef lets visitors learn about and get up close to the fascinating inhabitants of the Great Barrier Reef.
THE Whitsunday’s Daydream Island Resort and Spa is celebrating today after being featured on an episode of the Seven Network’s new reality show Bringing Sexy Back.

The reality television show features the incredible transformations of ordinary Australians after making the decision to improve their health and fitness.

Last night’s episode featured Livio Caldarone, a pizza chef from the Sunshine Coast who gained 40 kilograms in just two years. Fearing for his health and suffering from low self-esteem, Livio held off on committing to a wedding date to his fiancé and mother to his two children, Holly, until he was able to bring back the man she fell in love with.

After more than five months of exercise and healthy eating, Livio travelled to Daydream Island where he unveiled his amazing transformation and 33-kilogram weight loss in front of his family and friends. With the wedding being the motivating event of his weight loss journey, Livio was also able to fulfill his dream of marrying the love of his life at their dream wedding destination where they said their ‘I-dos’ the very next day.

Holly and Livio were married at magical Lovers Cove, which is one of the most exclusive and private locations on Daydream Island. It offers the best of natural beauty, hosting a large wooden deck set on a white coral beach with waves rolling in just metres away and the Whitsunday Passage as the backdrop.

For an island location, this project was logistically huge.

Months of planning and preparation went into the episode, which involved organising barges to transport freight and lighting trucks along with the famous Sexy truck, which holds the state of the art Dexa body scanner over to the island. It was a multi-camera shoot and we were even lucky enough to witness a drone camera in operation, which was able to capture amazing aerial footage of the island.

Not only did Daydream host the wedding party on the island, but also hosted up to 34 Seven Network crew members over four days, along with high profile host Samantha Armytage, personal trainer to the stars Cameron Byrnes and stylist, Jules Sebastian.

Daydream Island Resort and Spa’s CEO Scott Wilkinson said he was delighted that Livio had chosen Daydream Island for his wedding and weight-loss reveal.

“We’re thrilled that we could be part of this life-changing moment for Livio,” he said.

“Daydream was the perfect backdrop for them and their family and friends who all contributed to a special experience.

“We strive to provide a memorable and enjoyable experience for all of our guests where they can enjoy quality accommodation, superior service, delicious food and a range of activities against the beautiful backdrop of the Whitsunday Passage.

“It’s the perfect place to relax and feel reinvigorated and renewed.”

He said the exposure and potential interest generated from the show for both the leisure and wedding markets would be invaluable.

Livio was amazed by the location and wedding on Daydream Island.

“It was the most wonderful experience; I had the wedding of my dreams,” he said.

“Daydream was the perfect place for a reveal and I felt like a superstar.”

Daydream Island is home to three stunning ceremony venues. Along with Lovers Cove, which featured on the episode, there is the Endeavour Wedding Chapel which is situated at the water’s edge and featuring a floor to ceiling glass wall behind the altar. Ceremonies are also held on the picturesque and iconic Mermaids Beach with Daydream Island’s signature bronzed mermaids and the Whitsunday Islands as the perfect backdrop.

The multi award-winning resort, which recently took out best ‘Waterview’ and ‘Resort Reception’ venue at the inaugural Queensland Wedding and Events of Australia ‘Awards for Excellence’, can cater for weddings from two right up to 250 guests. With eight magnificent reception venues available and with a dedicated team of wedding professionals, couples are spoilt for choice at Daydream Island.

“It’s wonderful that we can raise awareness of Daydream and the Whitsunday Islands like this,” Mr Wilkinson said. “We look forward to welcoming more people to beautiful Daydream Island.”
